68 dog owners came to Yeovil Country Park on Wednesday 4 February to get their pet micro chipped for free.

The event, organised by South Somerset District Council’s Countryside Rangers and Enforcement Officers, saw the Dogs Trust attend to microchip dogs to ensure that lost or stolen dogs can be reunited with their keepers as quickly as possible. An Enforcement Officer from South Somerset District Council was also selling name tags at the event as it is still a requirement that all dogs wear one when in a public place.

Jude Greer from Dogs Trust said, “Micro chipping is a safe, effective and permanent way to link the dog and its keeper. Dogs Trust has long campaigned for all dogs to be micro chipped to ensure lost or stolen dogs can be reunited with their keepers as quickly as possible. So we are delighted with the proposed new dog chipping legislation – from April 2016. To ensure everybody will be able to comply with this law, we have considerably increased our free chipping across the country, including the roaming chipping teams helping local communities with their free micro chipping events”.

Councillor Jo Roundell Greene, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development added, “We were delighted how many people came to have their pets micro chipped on Wednesday by The Dogs Trust team. Having your pet chipped will enable us return your dog to you if it gets lost and picked up by one of our Enforcement Officers. If you missed this event there will be another chance for you to get your dog chipped for free, on Friday 20th February at the Ninesprings Café between 11am and 3pm”.

If a dog is found straying, vets, local authorities and the police can easily scan their microchip, establish who the dog belongs to and quickly contact them to come and collect their pet.
