ROUGH SLEEPERS & COLD WEATHER PROVISION

by Peter Seib on 25 January, 2013

There are measures in place to ensure that nobody is actually on the street and that every rough sleeper, once identified, is able to access some form of emergency provision, (although some rough sleepers may reject help offered).
We have two specialist outreach workers; Sharon Woodsell, who can be contacted on 07918 088118 and Kerry Mellor, who can be contacted on 07436 264026. They are employed by Barnabas Housing Association, with a three year funding stream secured from DCLG, (we are currently in year one).

We have an arrangement with Barnabas Housing Association, who is able to accommodate up to four rough sleepers in the sun room at Barnabas House on reclining chairs.

In addition to the reclining chairs for rough sleepers, a cold weather provision for up to five individuals is also available at Barnabas House.  Blow up mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows are provided. Hot drinks and food are available upon arrival and breakfast is given before leaving in the morning. The provision is available from 9pm until 8am the next morning.

Everyone who accesses one of the provisions is seen by either Sharon or Kerry and offered regular contact/key working sessions and given every assistance, in order to help find permanent accommodation or returned back home.

Sharon & Kerry have regular contact with various local agencies and work very closely with the police and the police community support officers.

There is a national phone line 0800 9177 765, which anybody can use if they see somebody sleeping rough and want to connect them with the appropriate local services.

Sharon Heath is Sharon & Kerry’s Manager and can be contacted at Barnabas House on 01935 431071.
